A new type of gaming of gaming console is on the horizon OUYA (pronounced OOH-Yah). It’s a new console device for the TV which is powered by android.

It open source software will allow developers to produce their games for the living room, it promises to remove the roadblocks of bringing a console game to market as every OUYA console is a dev kit.  You wont need to purchase a license or an expensive SDK. It’s built on Android, so developers out there already know how it works.

OUYA promises to deliver AAA titles but I doubt we will see much of these at first, as the big boys are likely to just keep an eye on it initially and see how it’s received.  However I am sure we will see a vast amount of Indie developers rushing to make games for the new console.

For me one of the great things about OUYA is that its not being developed by some major corporation out there, it launched as a new Kickstarter project on Tuesday 10th July, they already had a prototype but needed $950,000 to bring it to market. If you pledge $99 dollars you will have a console before it gets to stores, within just 8 hours hours of the campaign the project had already surpassed its goal, and at the time of writing this has already raised over a whopping $5,000,000 and has 22 days days of the campaign left.

As well as a very reasonable price tag, the console will be excellent value in other ways as one of the requirements of having an OUYA game is that a least a portion of the game is free to play, however its yet to be seen how much of the games will be free but there will definitely be a lot of free content to get your hands on.

Should Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo be concerned about the new console I think its to early as yet but it is exciting that things are getting shaken up a bit, its about time we saw something new and innovative available for us consumers.
