Legendo has brought us Apple owners a unique and intriguing little game. I, for one, feel the Mac gaming market is a bit slow but this has sparked an interest. It is coming to you PC guys too.
It’s predecessor, Ancient Trader is still available on iTunes, for the iPad. Having been out since 2010 and received critical acclaim by greats as Eurogamer (8/10) and EDGE magazine (8/10).
It’s a nautical based game, which is very strategic. The vehicle is a Cutty Sark style tall ship. You’re map is shrouded in cloud and as you navigate around, in a turn-based system you can gather items from sunken chests, fight sea monsters and other ships and dock at various ports. An AI (artificial intelligence- the computer) controls the other players when you play alone but there is also a multi-player variety where you can play your friends. You take turns with up to four mates.
Items you collect can be sold at the ports, earning you gold to then use to purchase further items you may require. You can upgrade your ships using gold coins and other artefacts. The map system used here is authentic 16th century art-style, reminiscent of Abraham Ortelius who created the first modern atlas. You learn something new everyday!
Eventually you will need to defeat the legendary Kraken but before this battle you have plenty of mythical (in our world) sea creatures. The battle system comprises of a rock paper scissors style game- by this I mean blue options beat red ones, which in turn beat green. Nothing too stressful here.
When I first saw this game I was a little reluctant to play but it has grown on me. Now every time I have the computer on, I have a play, and a little play turns into a bigger play. I really enjoy it, it’s different and quirky. Now if you excuse me, I’m off to have another play . . .
As a rating I will give it a well deserved 9/10.
